Ghost Hunting Equipment 101

Hey Legend Trippers! During and after Halloween is a great time to go on a paranormal legend trips. The weather cools down and the nights are longer. . A great time for paranormal activity. I haven’t really done a lot of the subject of the paranormal. Ghost hunting is just as popular as Bigfoot hunting. Also there currently are more shows on that deal with subject of the paranormal than cryptozoology or extraterrestrial.  In regards to that, I have observed that a lot of people that are interested in ghost hunting are sometimes a little intimidated by some of the equipment that is used on these investigations. They feel they should already know how to use it when they go on ghost hunt.

Paranormal shows like “Ghost Adventures” and “Ghost Lab” (my two favorite) have helped educate the general public on some of the ghost hunter’s tools of the trade, like the EMF reader and a voice recorder, but there is still some high tech equipment that people don’t know about or how to use. Nobody wants to look stupid when they are out there looking for ghosts.
It seems like every time I go on a paranormal investigation website there is a new piece of ghost hunting equipment being introduced. Thank God, my wife keeps on this and explains what the new device does. I decided that with more people taking an interest in the paranormal that I would explore some of the new equipment being used by ghost hunters. This might make you feel more knowledgeable during an investigation.
A word of caution to all ghost hunt beginners, some of these new devices are expensive and are only for the serious ghost hunter. If you find that you and the family are enjoying the experience and want to try out new stuff and have the money, then by all means. Please remember that some of these devices are only as good as the person using them. You need to really believe in what you are doing when it comes to paranormal investigations. With most ghost hunters, it a passion and not a business.

The paranormal investigation device I want to talk about this post is the Mel Meter. This device was created by Gary Galka, a father who lost his daughter, Melissa, eight years ago in a car crash. Galka says that his connection to Melissa remains strong, and that he constantly feels her presence. That connection led the electrical engineer to design what he says is a digital device for paranormal exploration -- or ghost hunting.
The Mel meter is the only instrument on the market to be able to record EMF and Temperature simultaneously. Before that, ghost hunters would have to carry both an EMF reader and a temperature gauge. There are many theories that surround the use of EMF meters and Thermometers one such theory being that with EMF (Electromagnetic Field) fluctuations come what are referred to as ‘Cold Spots’ these colds spots are a result of heat (energy) being transferred from one location to another again theories dictate that this destination of energy transference is the point of manifestation, again just theory. Galka’s device features a large backlit display with numbers large enough to be viewed from several feet away again as an investigator; this means no more fumbling for a flashlight to read the display. It will measure both mG and UT as well as both °F and °C along with the Minimum and Maximum measurements of both EMF and Temperature.

Galka's paranormal devices are sold through his company, D.A.S. Distribution Inc. in East Granby, which has six employees and makes the equipment in-house, according to the Courant. D.A.S Distributing sells sound meters, humidity and temperature meters and lasers to medical and aerospace companies as well -- the ghost-busting gadgets are just a small part of the business. Mel meters range in cost from $79 to about $350 and are sold through the Professional Measurement website, which calls them "the only professional measurement instrument line designed exclusively for paranormal enthusiasts."

The flagship device in the line is the Mel-8704-SB7-EMF meter, which detects a range of electromagnetic and temperature changes, has an AM/FM scanner, includes glow-in-the-dark buttons, and includes an "exclusive P-SB7 Integrated Spirit Box" -- the device purportedly used on "Ghost Adventures" to record the voice of a spirit.

He and his family were featured on a Travel Channel show called "Ghost Adventures," which explores paranormal phenomena. Using one of his devices, a voice is heard on the show saying, "Hi Daddy, I love you."
